Way to go Gagne

This man is Boston's Public Enemy Number One !!!

Well, he did it again. Gagne lost another game for the Sox.

Game was going fine Lester pitched 6.2 innings allowing 1 run. Manny D. comes in for the final out of the 7th. In the eight, Gagne gets the first 2 batters out then allows a hit, 3 walks then another hit. He gave 2 runs on a plater to the Jays.

Lugo gets a homer in the ninth but then the Soxs are halted and we have yet another loss 3-4.

Now I am 100% convinced that Gagne is working for the Yankers as a 5th column agent. The Yankers have killed Baltimore 12-0 ...so we will wake up on Wednesday morning with only a 2.5 game lead..

UGH.. I have such a headache now.....

I know I am a lone member of RSN when I say this, but I don't see how this is Gagne's fault. He didn't ask to come to Boston. He was traded. Pretty much against his will. Not because he has something against the Red Sox, but because he didn't want to be a set-up man. He is a closer, and I've read and heard many times that a closer has a hard time not pitching in closer situations. He had seven good outings in a row -- when he wasn't pitching in a set-up situation. (Just look what happened to Papelbon last weekend, when we put him in in the 8th inning instead of the 9th -- it was l ike the anti-Jon, he looked so bad out there.) The problem here is Francona, who insists on continuing to put Gagne into a situation he just can't pitch. He needs to save Gagne for closer opportunities when Jon isn't available. It just isn't working out for Gagne otherwise -- and that isn't his fault, because he didn't ask to come here to be our set-up man. If you watch Gagne & you're honest with yourself, you know he's trying. And if you look at his career stats, you know he is a way better pitcher than he has been in Boston. I can't even imagine how supremely frustrated he has to be right now.

jmp,

I heard during the game tonight that Okajima has been unavailable since Friday night: didn't hear why, but I figured something may be wrong when he gave up the 2 hr's. So we may be in a spot where it's unavoidable to use Gagne. And if we do, I'll cheer him on. Don't know what's wrong with him or why he has turned into a gas can.

All I know is he's OUR gas can: I gotta pull for the name on the front, not the one on the back.

Dawn, I agree with you on most of what you wrote: except he accepted the trade and had the Red Sox commit to paying him for incentive clauses he had if he was closing. So, he may want to close, but he chose to came.

Here's to hoping he rights the ship and gets it together. It looks like we may need him.

Ted: You make a very good & valid point. I remember Gagne hesitating & resisting. I guess he should have listened to his gut...

Ted,
Okie is out because he is just worn out. Rem-Dog stated that " he is tired and because he is tired he can not concentrate properly when throwing the ball.....throwing at the same 80ish speed but with out the control..." ok that was not verbatum, but pretty much what he said.

Ted and Dawn..
My view on Gagne is this... He is here in Boston..he accepted the contract...he is a professional....
he is not asked to play 3rd or another position.. he is asked to pitch, and if he was so good before he should be able to be decent no matter when he is asked to pitch.
He will make 7 million this year. He should be busting his ass to do his best. No excuses. Thats a hell of a lot of money that comes out of our pockets. Period.

Right now he really is the least of the teams problems.
Their ship is floundering and there is no rescue in site.
Tonight the 1-6 loss, lack of batting and paps melt down has the rescue flares in the air.
Swept by the Jays. What next, a sweep by the Rays???
I hcan hear the Yankee fans laughing already..in fact I heard it today when I picked up my Daughter at school. I have a Boston magnet on my van and another parent made a comment in the parking lot.
But I will continue to be a fan no matter what. I love the Sox thru thick and thin...just wish we had more thick....

There cannot be a sweep. I will not be in the stands on Sunday to watch them lose. Nope nope nope. Not happening. Lalalalala...

And anyway, I am in a refreshed state of mind after reading this blog post on The Joy of Sox. ::deep breaths::

Oh, and one more thing. I *do* homestly believe that Gagne is trying. I think he's trying with all his might. In fact, I think he may be trying *too* hard. We know he can pitch. Look how quickly those first two outs came. I know that when the wheels come off, he looks angry & upset. Unlike an apathetic JD Drew.

Somehow I found Papelbon's grand slam last night equally disturbing, yet it doesn't seem to be receiving the same weight...
